Partnering with the Public Library on Web 2.0 Tools for Student Research

"Today, Web 2.0 tools make collaboration easier than ever, and your public librarian is there to help you navigate through them. While public libraries have many focuses, resources for children and teenagers are a mainstay of their programs and materials. These librarians work with the same students you do, just after school - helping with homework, research papers, and math problems, as well as finding the perfect novel for a historical fiction assignment. Why not work together during the school day? This collaboration can help you assist students to understand the Web 2.0 tools that can make research fun and invigorating, and it gives you a chance to share the workload."

"School Libraries Count!"

Shared with permission - from AASL (note deadline of March 12).

"AASL has just launched our third year of the longitudinal study
"School Libraries Count!" All K-12 schools, public and private, are
invited to participate on a voluntary basis. Past participant's
continued involvement is crucial when examining trends over time, as
well as new participants so that an accurate reflection of the US
educational demographics are represented. Additional questions were added to last year’s study that focused on the use of social networking in the classroom. Findings showed that the
majority of public and private schools were incorporating social networking tools into the classroom to aid in collaborative learning. This year's study will include additional questions regarding English Language Learners (ELLs) and resources made available to them through
school library media programs.

GIS in Education

GIS in Education Community-

We're happy to announce the publication of the Rural STEM GIS activity collection for AEJEE and ArcGIS. This collection of 12 activities (authored by Barbaree Ash Duke, edited by me and classroom tested by teachers around the country) focuses on middle school science and social studies. Each activity comes with student instructions and worksheet, teacher notes, an answer key and all relevant data. The activities are referenced to relevant national standards. Each activity can also be easily modified for younger or older students. Each activity can be used by itself or in conjunction with one or more of the other activities. We hope teachers in a variety of settings will find these activities of use.

All the activities can be accessed at http://www.isat.jmu.edu/stem/curriculum.html We've categorized the activities into three groups by GIS experience:
