2005 Arts Education Honors Course Standards for Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts

In November 2004, the State Board of Education approved standards to be used for all honors courses effective with the 2005-2006 school year as a result of State Board of Education Policy HSP-L-004.

Honors versions of all courses shall adhere to, align with and reflect these North Carolina Honors Course Standards. The revised policy requires that prior to the honors designation there must be a curriculum guide and administrative review of each proposed course. The development, review and approval process must be established and ongoing in each school and/or system to ensure honors courses warrant the additional weighted credit.

According to the policy, there may be honors courses in arts education. Those courses that are the third and fourth year course components of a numerical sequence of courses in any discipline area of arts education (dance, music, theatre arts or visual arts) may have honors versions. Students may only receive credit for an individual honors course one time. The new, generic North Carolina Honors Course Standards (Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Standards) apply to all arts education honors courses as well as other disciplines.

The NC Honors Course Standards require school systems to develop honors courses in adherence to the new standards, use an approval process, and prepare a curriculum guide for each individual honors course offered. The Arts Education Teaching Preparation Portfolio form should be used in the development of arts education honors courses. When completed, the form and any additional materials should be submitted to the appropriate administrators for approval, as required by the LEA. Using this form ensures that Arts Education Honors Courses meet both the general NC Honors Course Standards AND the Arts Education Honors Course Standards.

The 2005 Arts Education Honors Course Standards
include overviews, prerequisites, and relevant standards for honors courses in the subjects of dance, music, theatre arts and visual arts. Please be aware that changes have been made to the Arts Education Honors Course Standards document since the 1994 and 1998 versions. This 2005 document, starting with the 2005-2006 school year, supersedes all other previous Arts Education Honors Course Standards.

Based on surveys and data from the field, the arts education SCS did not have any significant revisions during the 2005-2006 revision cycle. The only minor change that took place was the addition of AP courses to the SCS. The next revision cycle is scheduled to take place in 2010.

Keep informed through the NCDPI Arts Education Listserv Weekly Update to find out how you can serve on an arts education revision/writing committee and/or provide input and feedback to drafts of the Standard Course of Study during the next revision cycle.
FUTURE-READY HIGH SCHOOL CORE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK (GCS 1): Download file

State Board of Education members approved a Future-Ready Core Course of Study (June 2007), which affects the entering freshmen class of 2009-2010. The 21 required units (beginning with the entering class of 2010) include 6 elective units, two of which must be any combination of Career Technical Education, Arts Education or Second Language. (Students entering a UNC-system college or university must complete two units of credit in a second language).

In addition to the Future-Ready Core, students will continue to be required to successfully complete a graduation project and to score proficient on the end-of-course assessments in Algebra I, Biology, English I, Civics and Economics and US History. Local school districts have the option of adding other requirements for graduation as well.
In approving the new standards, the State Board of Education stressed its desire that local school districts be given the flexibility to create curricula pathways that are innovative and rigorous. Students should be encouraged to take advantage of college level courses while in high school, including Learn and Earn programs through the community college or university dual enrollment offerings.

The Board's Globally Competitive Students committee charged the Department of Public Instruction with carrying out four activities to support the new standards: provide additional support to guidance counselors to help them guide students in making elective selections and take advantage of opportunities to obtain up to two years of college including an associate's degree; provide additional professional development and course development in mathematics; consider ways to incorporate second language instruction in the K-8 grades along with a language proficiency test; and to continue to collect information about arts education in the schools to ensure that arts education continues to be widely available to all students.
