The North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) wishes to recognize and reward those secondary school teachers who make mathematics exciting and who nurture their students' enthusiasm by getting them involved in mathematics fairs, projects, and competitions which extend and enhance everyday classroom experiences. Those teachers who succeed in motivating students to excel in mathematics are the ones we wish to
single out for recognition.

This award program is conducted by Mathematics Curriculum Coordinators in School System Central Offices. Copies of the memo regarding the award and the submission sheets are included here for the convenience of the Mathematics Curriculum Coordinators.
Credit for High courses taken in Middle School

Scroll to the bottom of the page to download a copy of this FAQ list as well as policy memos.

<strong
Considerations for middle grades placement in Algebra I
Any middle grades student who enrolls in Algebra I must be adequately prepared for success, including demonstrated mastery of the current standards for Grade 8 mathematics. The prerequisite skills for Algebra I as outlined in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Mathematics adopted by the State Board of Education in 2003 are as follows:

•	Operate with the real numbers to solve problems.
•	Find, identify, and interpret the slope and intercepts of a linear relation.
•	Visually determine a line of best fit for a given scatterplot; explain the meaning of the line; and make predictions using the line.
•	Collect, organize, analyze, and display data to solve problems.
•	Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.

Each of these prerequisite skills is found in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Mathematics Grade 8 (2003).

Frequently Asked Questions</strong>

Question 1:
May students who are currently in high school use high school mathematics courses
(or foreign language courses) that they passed during grades 6-8 (prior to school year 2007-08) to fulfill high school graduation requirements?
Answer:
No, this policy begins with students who are in grades 6-8 during the 2007-2008
school year.

Question 2:
If a middle school student successfully passed the Algebra I course and EOC in 2006 – 2007 and then successfully passed the Geometry course and EOC in 2007 – 2008, will they receive 1 or 2 units of credit as they are promoted to the high school?
Answer:
Opportunity to receive high school credit for mathematics courses taken during 6-8 applies to students who are in grades 6 – 8 during 2007 – 2008. These students will “take” all of their high school credits from middle school to high school with them, even if the courses were taken before 2007 – 2008. If a student who is 8th grade during 2007-2008 successfully completes Geometry during 2007 – 2008, having passed Algebra I in 2006 – 2007 as a 7th grader, then that student will receive two units of high school mathematics credit as he or she enters high school in 2008-2009.

Question 3:
Does the local district have the option to not allow students in grades 6-8 to take
high school mathematics courses at the middle school for high school graduation credit?
Answer:
No, students who show readiness to take the high school courses should have the option to take the courses subject to local availability.

Question 4:
Can a student who earned a HS credit for Algebra 1/IM 1 while in 8th grade choose to retake Algebra 1/IM 1 in 9th grade?
Answer:
It is a local decision as to whether you allow or require a student who passes Algebra 1/IM 1 in middle school to retake Algebra 1/IM 1 in high school. A student who retakes Algebra 1/IM 1 forfeits the credit that would have been received. The student cannot receive credit for the same course twice. It is a local decision if the math can be counted as an elective.

Question 5:
Does a student who retakes Algebra 1 in 9th grade after passing the EOC in 8th grade retake the EOC?
Answer:
Yes. In each case, the EOC counts 25% of the final grade.

Question 6:
Does a student who retakes Algebra 1/IM 1 in 9th grade have the 9th grade Algebra 1/IM 1 grade included in grade point average?

(MSP) Mathematics & Science Partnership RFP Sept. 07

When the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 became law in 2002, a section of the Act allocated money to each state to improve its mathematics and science education. North Carolina has been allotted approximately $4,623,561 for fiscal year 2008-2009 to continue the twelve projects already funded and begin from two to four new three-year Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) grants. The goal of these grants is to improve the mathematics and science knowledge of North Carolina students in high-need school districts by providing professional-development activities to their mathematics and science teachers. Proposals are due to DPI on January 30, 2008.
