I. Four units in mathematics for every student
Effective with the Freshman Class of 2009-2010, Four Mathematics units are required for graduation: [Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II] OR [Integrated Mathematics I, II, III] plus a fourth mathematics course to be aligned with the student’s after-high-school plans. Courses that are in the 2003 revision of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Mathematics 9-12 that meet the Future-Ready Core Course of Study Graduation Requirements are indicated in the chart below.

Core Mathematics Courses

[Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II] OR [Integrated Mathematics I, II, III]

Plus

One course beyond Algebra II/Integrated Mathematics III

Courses that are accepted by the UNC General Administration for admission to UNC institutions
Advanced Functions and Modeling, Pre-Calculus, Integrated Mathematics IV,
Discrete Mathematics, AP Statistics, or AP Calculus

Community College Mathematics Courses accepted by the UNC General Administration as the “4th Math”
• MAT 155 and MAT 155A (Statistical Analysis)
• MAT 165 and MAT 165A (Finite Math)
• MAT 171, MAT 171A (Pre-Calculus Algebra) AND MAT 172, MAT 172A (Pre-Calculus Trigonometry)
• MAT 175 and MAT 175A (Pre-Calculus)
• MAT 252 and MAT 252A (Statistics II)
• MAT 271 (Calculus I)
• MAT 272 (Calculus II)

Courses that are not accepted by the UNC General Administration for admission to UNC institutions but may be suitable for meeting the “4th Math” for high school graduation To Be Determined
Before an approved list of CTE courses that may be used for the 4th mathematics is generated, the following will be considered:
• Develop a correlation between targeted courses and competencies within the mathematics standard course of study in order to validate sufficient math content.
• Obtain input from school systems concerning the impact and feasibility of awarding mathematics credit as it relates to CTE course offerings.

Community College Mathematics Courses NOT currently accepted by the UNC General Administration as the “4th Math” but are suitable for meeting the “4th Math” for high school graduation
• MAT 140 and MAT 140A (Survey of Mathematics)
• MAT 141 and MAT 141A (Mathematical Concepts I)
• MAT 142 and MAT 142A (Mathematical Concepts II)
• MAT 145 and MAT 145A (Analytical Math)
• MAT 151 and MAT 151A (Statistics I)
• MAT 161 and MAT 161A (College Algebra)
• MAT 162 and MAT 162A (College Trigonometry)
• MAT 167 and MAT 167A (Discrete Mathematics)
• MAT 210 and MAT 210A (Logic)
• MAT 263 and MAT 263A (Brief Calculus)

II. Non-Future Ready Core Alternatives
Definition: At the request of a parent and with counseling provided by the school, a student will be able to opt out of the Future-Ready Core Course of Study mathematics sequence. He/she will be required to pass [Algebra I and Geometry] OR [Integrated Mathematics I and II], and two alternative mathematics courses. Most students will be in the Future-Ready Core sequence of courses.

Who is the student? Despite appropriate and focused intervention in mathematics over time, the student has demonstrated unusual difficulty in mastering mathematics concepts.

Alternative Mathematics Courses
(will emphasize financial and life skills applications of mathematics)
“Alternative Math Course 1”
“Alternative Math Course 2”
