Grade 8 Classroom Assessment Materials (2003)
During the 2001-2002 school year the Mathematics and Science section of NCDPI worked with a group of teachers on a project developing a set of quality, effective, classroom assessments that could be used to determine student understanding. Dr. Glenda Carter of North Carolina State University, who has been involved in several assessment projects, served as a consultant and contributed a great deal of time getting the material ready for distribution. The teachers working on the eighth grade material selected various objectives from the 1998 North Carolina Mathematics Standard Course of Study and wrote items aligned to these objectives. These items were field-tested by grade eight students and the teachers analyzed their work. Based on this analysis, many of the items were rewritten and refined in order to clarify the assigned task and the items were again field-tested. The teachers developed rubrics for each of the assessment items, and selected samples of student work are included as exemplars to illustrate the rubrics.
