NBC has launched a free, collaborative learning community for students ages 13 and up that incorporates gaming, discussion, and video resources in a safe online environment. Created by NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, the site name--iCUE-- stands for Immerse, Connect, Understand, and Excel. Its learning platform uses a patented technology, based on research from the MIT Education Arcade, called the CueCard; its a combination media player, flash card, note-taking tool, and trading card. This "flip-card" technology allows users to warch streaming videos from NBC News and then "flip" the CueCard over for additional information. Users can "snag" CueCards and store them in personal resource libraries or CueCard "stacks"), customize them using the "jot" feature to writer thoughts and opinions, and exchange comments about content with their icue friends. MIT is conducting a study to find out how iCue can help students learn and build critical thinking skills and 21st century communications skills. The websites launch has a politically themed collection of games and activities highlighting the 2008 presidential race. A U.S. History course has been added and is operational. Over the summer U. S. government and politics, and English language and composition will be added. All content is aligned with the education standards for Advanced Placement courses..from June 2008 eSchool News

We want to let you know how much North Carolina's continued support of Curriculum Pathways is appreciated here at SAS. In recognition of that support, we are offering North Carolina teachers (English, social studies, science, math, and Spanish, grades 8-12) the opportunity to participate in our online professional-development course, beginning October 6 (and ending November 14). We will waive our standard course fee ($300) for all participating teachers (number of seats will be capped at 100).

Curriculum Pathways® OPD (Online Professional Development) is an asynchronous course, conducted online over 6 weeks. It incorporates a variety of assignments: working through resources as students, evaluating instruction, implementing lessons in the classroom, participating in cooperative learning activities and online discussions, and creating portfolio artifacts (capstone project). Teachers completing the course are provided with documentation to facilitate the receipt of renewal credits (3.0 CEUs).
We have found this online professional-development course to have a greater impact on teachers and their instructional practices when:

· there is school-level administrative and technical support for this initiative

· multiple teachers from the same school enroll so they can share experiences in and out of the course

· teachers recognize the course does require an investment of time (approximately 5-6 hours per week)-although asynchronous, completion of assignments and participation in discussions need to occur over designated time periods-these discussions are a critical component of online instruction
Curriculum Pathways® OPD appeals to teachers who desire a program that provides:

learning in context - instructional experiences that relate to their content and student needs

· flexible learning - anytime, anyplace - asynchronous instruction that can be completed at appropriate and convenient times

· peer-to-peer interaction - teachers discuss pedagogy and content, working with-and learning from-each other

· time to try - teachers apply what they are learning to the classroom and get support and feedback along the way

· credit - documentation that can be used to obtain CEUs is awarded for completion of coursework

· a model - an instructional model that integrates technology and can be used repeatedly in the classroom
Participating teachers should be willing to serve as instructional resources for other teachers at their schools who want to use Curriculum Pathways with their students.
If you (or teachers with whom you work) wish to enroll in the course, please e-mail Deborah.Gray@sas.com<mailto:Deborah.Gray@sas.com> at your earliest convenience (but no later than June 30) and provide her with each teacher's name, e-mail address, school name, and subject area. We will select teachers from the list of potential participants based on their location and the disciplines they teach.
Participant selections will be announced after July 1. Selected teachers will receive registration information at that time.

"Censorship in Schools and Libraries" exhibit available for Banned Books
Week - September 27 - October 4, 2008.

The Long Island Coalition Against Censorship is an association of 22
educational and community organizations (16 are public libraries and
professional library organizations). The purpose of the Coalition is to
defend challenges to the First Amendment rights of public and school
libraries when there are efforts by individuals or groups to censor
books and other materials

In planning an exhibit for Banned Books Week in the fall or at another
time in 2008-2009, you might wish to consider displaying the new edition
of our exhibit, “Censorship in Schools and Libraries.”

The exhibit presents 32 illustrations of censorship each one
approximately 11" x 14" with accompanying text that is 11" x 14." The
history of censorship in public libraries and schools highlights
incidents of censorship that have occurred nationally during the last
150 years. Included are descriptions of the censorship of Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn, In the Night Kitchen, The Catcher in the Rye, and the
novels of Judy Blume and Chris Crutcher. The censorship of Susan
Patron’s novel, The Higher Power of Lucky, which was awarded the
Newberry Prize in 1997 is in the new edition. U.S. Supreme Court
decisions (including the landmark school case in the Island Trees School
District) and lower court decisions are an integral part of the exhibit.

The 2008 edition includes efforts to censor the popular Harry
Potter’s children's books (Harry Potter books were burned in
Alamogordo, New Mexico). Besides new cases, there is an update of
censorship incidents in libraries and classrooms that have occurred
since 1990. Quality copies have been reproduced which may be readily
presented on posters or bulletin boards in your library or classroom and
then retained by you as a reference source. If your space is limited, we
suggest that you rotate the incidents of censorship during the time the
exhibit is on display. Excerpts from the exhibit are on our web site
www.the-licac.org. Click on Exhibits, "Censorship in Schools and
Libraries" (for a description of the exhibit) and then Selected Cases.
You may order the exhibit by e-mail or sending a purchase order to the
LI Coalition Against Censorship, PO Box 296, Port Washington, N.Y.
11050. The cost of the exhibit including mailing charges is $40.00
postpaid by check. If you need further information our e-mail address is

My name is Ann Ewbank and I am the new chair of the AASL Task Force on
No Child Left Behind. As you may know, the American Library Association
has worked very hard to get a bill to Congress called the SKILLs Act (S.
1699). This bill would require that a state-certified school librarian
serve every public school, as part of No Child Left Behind.

We need North Carolinans’ help to ensure the inclusion of the
Strengthening Kids’ Interest in Learning and Libraries (SKILLs) Act in
the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

North Carolina Senator Burr is on the U.S. Senate Health, Education,
Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. The HELP Committee will be
considering reauthorization of NCLB in the next couple of weeks. In
order for the SKILLs Act to be included in NCLB - that is, to place a
state-certified school library media specialist in every school - each
member of the Senate must co-sponsor the SKILLS Act. It is especially
important to have Senator Alexander co-sponsor the SKILLS Act since they
are on the HELP Committee.

We need as many North Carolinans as possible to call or fax the
Senator’s office in the next 3 days and ask her to co-Sponsor the
SKILLs Act (S. 1699). Please send this email out to as many North
Carolinans as possible!

Senator Burr Phone: (202) 224-3154
Senator Burr Fax: (202) 228-2981

When contacting the Senator prepare to state why this issue is of
critical importance:

The SKILLs Act (S. 1699)

Requires school districts, to the extent feasible, to ensure that every
school within the district employs at least one state-certified school
library media specialist in each school library;
Establishes as a state goal that there be at least one state-certified
school library media specialist in every public school no later than the
beginning of the 2010-2011 school year;
Broadens the focus of training, professional development, and
recruitment activities to include school library media specialists;
Ensures that funds will serve elementary, middle, and high school
students;
Requires books and materials to be appropriate for and engage the
interest of students in all grade levels and students with special
learning needs, including English language learners.
Talking Points

Multiple studies have affirmed that there is a clear link between
school library media programs that are staffed by a school library media
specialist and student academic achievement. Across the United States,
research has shown that students in schools with good school libraries
learn more, get better grades, and score higher on standardized test
scores than their peers in schools without libraries.
Academic Librarians: School libraries are KEY to ensuring college
readiness.
Public Librarians: School library media specialists give students the
skills they need to utilize your library to its fullest extent.
Long regarded as the cornerstone of the school community, school
libraries are no longer just for books. Instead, they have become
sophisticated 21st century learning environments offering a full range
of print and electronic resources that provide equal learning
opportunities to all students, regardless of the socio-economic or
education levels of the community - but only when they are staffed by
school library media specialists trained to collaborate with teachers
and engage students meaningfully with information that matters to them
both in the classroom and in the real world.
Only about 60 percent of our school libraries have a full-time,
state-certified school library media specialist on staff.
With limited funding and an increased focus on school performance,
administrators are trying to stretch dollars and cut funds across
various programs to ensure that maximum resources are dedicated to
improving student academic achievement.
Because NCLB does not highlight the direct correlation between school
library media specialists and
increased student academic achievement,
library resource budgets are increasingly being used to mitigate the
effects of budgetary constraints.
Thank you,
