K-2 Social Development
Developing a sense of self and a sense of others is a critical component of social development in primary classrooms. With the guidance of the classroom teacher and family members, children are provided opportunities to develop the following behaviors and characteristics.
Kindergarten:
Demonstrate awareness that school is a group setting requiring sharing of time and materials.
Participate as a member of a cooperating group to complete tasks.
Use language appropriate for the context (peer group, oral presentation, etc.).
Increase independent work habits to engage in learning tasks for appropriate time and purpose.
Consider viewpoints of others (peers, adults, authors) and demonstrate respect for others.
Begin to collaborate with peers and adults to extend language abilities.
First Grade:
Participates in group activities, sharing time and materials.
Participates in collaborative small group activities by sharing information and responses to reading and language use.
Participates in providing responses for peers in reading and writing activities.
Shares ideas for working cooperatively to complete group's assigned tasks.
Uses appropriate judgment and skills to select books and writing topics to read and write independently.
Assumes responsibility for own actions and decisions.
Demonstrates appropriate interactions with peers and adults.
Uses appropriate language and skill to express positive and negative needs, ideas and request of peers and adults.
Second Grade:
Make choices about projects and materials to use when provided guidance.
Work collaboratively and cooperatively with peers and adults.
Recognize viewpoint of peers and adults and adapt their needs to work as part of a group.
Recognize the need for self-regulation and manage own behavior and tasks as guided by adults.
Participate in group discussions when responding to reading or sharing writing by using appropriate language and social skills.
Assume responsibility for own decisions, actions, and learning.
